Listening in the Modern World

Anyone else feeling that things are really so, so tense right now? Anyone else wondering how we can ever come together across such stark divides?

We were discussing this in my small group this week and one person shared an intriguing idea that he’d heard from a friend…

What if you meet with an acquaintance who has very different views from yourself and ask them to show you videos from their social media feed that influence their beliefs about something? And then, you can do the same.

We all know that our algorithms are feeding us a pretty limited perspective that makes the other side seem ludicrous. But…what are they seeing in their feed that makes our side seem equally insane? The results may surprise us all!

We still may disagree, but we might understand a little better. And it may help us bridge the divide between the camps that most of us have unwittingly been led to by social media and the warring news factions.

Maybe we need to do some more listening to understand. And perhaps this is one way we can do it.

  1. This so so true! I’ve been wondering why people are so divided and so I’ve been trying to search news groups that post the opposite of what I lean towards for this reason, to try and understand where the crazy statements are coming from. I would be fired up too if I was reading what both sides are saying. I love the Pour Over news for a brief snippet of what is going on in the world without any extra influence other than some scripture and suggested ways to pray for people out there. These are heavy times with TMI everywhere you look or listen. And we need to apply some mercy and grace to those in the world around us who are carried away by Satans lies and influence. And pray we don’t get swept up into it as well. Thanks for the reminder.

  2. My husband and I are not ion the same page with local and world events. There are friend and family I find myself in the same situation with. The only issue I see with your idea is I would want to know the source of the posted feed. So many people on all sides are posting things that have not been researched.
